Who We Are
KIPP: Stand Academy is the first KIPP School in Minnesota and is located behind the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis. KIPP was brought to Minnesota thanks to the generosity and interests of our founding investor, The Carlson Family Foundation. KIPP, the "Knowledge Is Power Program," is a national network of free, open-enrollment, college-preparatory public charter schools with a track record of preparing students in underserved communities for success in college and life. There are 125 KIPP schools in 20 different states and the District of Columbia serving more than 39,000 students.
KIPP: Stand Academy serves students in 5th to 8th grade in Minneapolis and surrounding areas primarily representing zip codes 55411, 55412 and 55407. Ninety-eight percent of our student body are students of color, of which ninety-two percent are African Americans. Ninety-two percent of our students receive federal lunch aid of which eighty-seven percent qualify for free lunch.
What We Do
Rigorous academic preparation and holistic character development have been the focus of KIPP's middle schools since the first KIPP was launched in Houston in 1994. This dual purpose drives all aspects of our schools, shaping our college-going culture, extended school day and year, and curriculum. It explains why our school leader and all of our teachers ask so much of our students, yet also provide joyful experiences in exchange for commitment and hard work. One of our KIPP parents, Lisa Dunlap, says it best: "KIPP has been the solid foundation of support we needed to help springboard our daughter into a quality high school that will help further her education and prepare her for college and beyond. I love KIPP!"
KIPP: Stand Academy's primary goal is to prepare all of our students for success in college and life. To do that, we are focused on ensuring our students develop both the academic skills and the character necessary to help them define what they stand for. Through a culture of high expectations, we seek to instill in our students the values of honor, curiosity, tenacity and joy.
At KIPP Stand Academy our teachers are unified in doing what's best for students. Our teachers share best practices and collaborate as a school and with a powerful network of over 2,000 teachers nationally.

Our Pillars
KIPP schools share a core set of operating principles known as the Five Pillars.
HIGH EXPECTATIONS: KIPP Schools set clearly defined and measurable high expectations for academic achievement and character that make no excuses based on students’ background.
CHOICE & COMMITMENT: Each member of the KIPP Stand Academy community including parents, students, and teachers signs a ‘commitment to excellence form’ pledging the effort necessary for success.
RESULTS: KIPP Schools focus on a high level of student performance on standardized tests and other objective measures and emphasize continuous improvement in teaching and learning.
POWER TO LEAD: KIPP: Stand Academy School Leader, Alvin Abraham, has the freedom to innovate in the way he leads, resulting in maximum effectiveness helping students learn.
MORE TIME: KIPP: Stand Academy is in session with extended hours daily and one Saturday per month during the school year, and for two weeks in the summer. This means our students are spending 50% more time in school than average Minneapolis public school students.
