Board of Directors Bios

Luwam Arefe joined the KIPP team in 2010 as a Teach For America corps member and joined the board in August 2016. At KIPP, he has held a variety of positions including math teacher, assistant principal, principal, and now serves as the Chief Talent Officer for KIPP Minnesota. Luwam attended the University of St. Thomas, majoring in International Economics and Business and worked in finance for a short time before he began working in education. He enjoys exploring new cities around the world and spending time with family and friends. He is a native Minnesotan and resides in Minneapolis.

Caroline Correia joined the KIPP board in March 2016. Caroline's background is in fundraising and event planning for various non-profits in Connecticut, Washington, and Minnesota. She has been an advocate for public education and education reform for the past 14 years. Caroline co-founded a fundraising guild to support Powerful Schools, a non-profit delivering school programming in Seattle. In West Hartford, CT, she co-founded Growing Great Schools, a non-profit empowering students and their families to become active participants in their nutritional and physical health and promoting food security and sustainability. In the Twin Cities, Caroline enjoys volunteering as a puppeteer for PACER Center. Caroline is the daughter of immigrants and is a first generation college graduate. She received her BA in English Literature from Union College in New York. She lives in Edina with her husband and two school-aged sons.

Lisa Dunlap joined the board in June, 2012 as the Parent Representative. She started volunteering with Pillsbury United Communities in 2004, started a Walking Club and winning a Meritorious Neighborhood Service Award. Lisa has worked for Pillsbury United Communities Oak Park Center for the last six years running Health & Wellness programs that include her Walking Club that was funded in 2005. She has since re-framed the Walking Club into the Families in Motions program to help families work against obesity, diabetes and other diseases that are prevalent in traditionally underserved populations. Lisa is a Certified Smoking Cessation Counselor and Community Health Worker. She is a Girl Scout Leader and mom to two growing girls. Lisa is currently the Youth Program Coordinator at Oak Park.

Tristofah Ivory joined the board in January 2016, and has been a KIPP parent since June 2009, She has two KIPP almuni and two current KIPPsters in the 7th and 8th grades. Tris was born and raised in St. Paul, MN and attended public school K-12. She became a Licensed Practical Nurse in 2007 and a realtor in 2015. She currently resides in Fridley, MN with her husband and six children.

Michael Kurhajetz joined the Board in August 2015, and was involved on the Finance committee since April 2015. Michael currently leads the Performance Management team in the Human Capital division of Minneapolis Public Schools, and also volunteers as a middle school math tutor during the school year. Michael attended public school for his entire K-12 experience, and went on to earn a BA in English Literature from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, and an MBA from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan. After many years of leadership experience at Minneapolis-based companies, Piper Jaffray and Target Corporation, Michael was honored to be accepted into the Broad Residency in Urban Education. As a Broad Resident, Michael served from 2011 through 2014 as Director of School Operations for the KIPP: New Orleans region of schools, which doubled in size during that time. Upon returning to Minneapolis, living in the Regina neighborhood with his wife and son, Michael is thrilled to stay connected to KIPP through this opportunity on the KIPP Minnesota Board.

Steve Pieper joined the board in June, 2013. Steve comes from Best Buy Co., Inc. where he has held several Finance and Operations roles since joining the company in 1994. Steve is currently the Senior Director of Finance for the Connectivity Business Group which consists of computing, tablets, mobile phones and all related hardware, accessories, connections, content, and services. He is also active with the Best Buy Children's Foundation and has volunteered for organizations such as Second Harvest and Feed My Starving Children. Steve holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance from the University of Wisconsin - LaCrosse and a Masters degree in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management. Steve resides in Eden Prairie, Minnesota with his wife.

Brenda Radichel Quaye joined the board in March 2016. She has been a supporter of KIPP Minnesota for four years. Brenda has owned her own commercial real estate development company for over 17 years. She has a Bachelor's Degree from Boston University and a Master's Degree from M.I.T. A mother of two and an international traveler, Brenda has traveled to over 30 countries, and lived in Shanghai, China from 2006-2009. Brenda has served on the Phillips Eye Institute Foundation Board and is Past President of the Minnesota Commercial Real Estate Women (MNCREW).

Ben Shane joined the board in February, 2015, but has been involved with the school since June, 2014. He is currently the Chief Operating Officer of Fly Feet Running. Prior to that he worked at Coca-Cola as a Director of Sales, and also Target Corporation where he spent his 10-year Target career in Merchandising. Prior to Target he worked in a forensic accounting unit at both Arthur Andersen LLP and KPMG LLP. Ben was born and raised in Indianapolis, IN, then earned a B.A. in Economics from DePauw University, and an M.B.A. in Marketing from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. In addition to living in Toronto, Ben has studied or interned in Germany, England and Japan. He and his wife have three young children. They live in the Western suburbs, where Ben is involved in coaching and managing numerous sports activities for his children.

Renee I. Uzong, J.D. joined the board in June 2016, and has been involved with the school since May 2015. She is currently a Sourcing Legal Specialist with 3M. Previously, she worked at Robert Half Legal where she spent three years as a direct hire recruiter in the Minneapolis-St. Paul market. Prior to Robert Half Legal, she practiced as a family law attorney. Renee was born and raised in the Twin Cities and lived and studied in Spain. She earned her B.A. from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities and a J.D. from Hamline University School of Law. She enjoys volunteering and spending time with her nephew. She currently resides in Minneapolis.

Sean Walker joined the KIPP board in March 2016. Sean is a senior vice president at General Mills, and currently leads the company’s Latin American businesses. He has been with General Mills since 1989, and has served in roles of increasing responsibility across multiple divisions and countries. His roles have included Finance Director, Vice President Marketing, and General Manager. He has lived and worked in Brazil, England, Switzerland, Jamaica, Canada, and the USA. Sean has volunteered and been on the boards of multiple non-profit and education based organizations in Minneapolis, Toronto, and Sao Paulo. Sean resides in the Twin Cities with his family.

Cam Winton joined the board in November, 2014. He is a policy advocate for the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce. Previously, he served as an attorney in the power-generation industry and with Robins, Kaplan, Miller, & Ciresi L.L.P. in Minneapolis. Cam attended public school from kindergarten through 12th grade, then earned a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania, an M.Sc. from the London School of Economics, and a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center. He and his wife have three young children. They live in Minneapolis, where Cam was a candidate for mayor in 2013.
