KIPP Minnesota to Open New School this Fall
The KIPP Minnesota board of directors recently finalized the location of a second middle school, located near 26th and Broadway Avenues in North Minneapolis. KIPP Legacy Academy will be the third school in the KIPP Minnesota network. The school will open in August 2019 with 84 6th grade scholars and grow to 680 scholars in grades K-8 over the next seven years.
The new campus is part of KIPP Minnesota’s strategic plan to grow to four schools - two primary schools and two middle schools - serving more than 1,000 students in grades K-8 by 2026. This expansion aligns with the work of Minnesota Comeback to close educational opportunity gaps and increase access to great schools for 30,000 Minneapolis students. KIPP Minnesota was launched in 2006 by the Carlson Family Foundation and a coalition of local leaders seeking to replicate the national success of the KIPP network which began in 1994.
The KIPP Legacy Academy values are defined as joy, love, and resilience. The new school will focus on encouraging and challenging students as leaders. Students will be supported in discovering their identities and strengths as they honor and celebrate the individual strengths of others, working together to impact their community. The school’s evidence of success will be a 100% graduation rate of its alumni from a college-prep high school.
Kate Mazurek is the founding Principal for the new middle school. Prior to joining the KIPP Minnesota team, Ms. Mazurek spent twelve years with KIPP Chicago as a teacher and school leader. Ms. Mazurek received a bachelor’s degree in history and math from Northwestern University and a master’s degree in education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. During 2018-2019 Ms. Mazurek is participating in the Fisher Fellowship program through the KIPP Foundation which gives her the opportunity to tour high-performing schools around the country, collaborate with peers, and participate in leadership and equity trainings. Kate is excited to work with community partners and the KIPP Minnesota team to provide more quality school choice for families in the Twin Cities by opening a new campus in North Minneapolis.
“Ms. Mazurek is a strong school leader with significant experience and expertise in understanding what it takes to run a highly effective school with a focus on equitable education and leadership,” commented KIPP Minnesota Executive Director Nicole Boardman.
KIPP Legacy Academy joins the current KIPP campus in the Shingle Creek neighborhood of North Minneapolis, which houses KIPP North Star Primary and KIPP North Star Academy. The Primary school opened in 2016 and will serve grades K-4 next year. The Academy opened in 2008 and was listed in the 2018 Minneapolis School Finder as both a “Changing the Odds School” for low-income students and the only “High Quality School” in North Minneapolis.
The new school will complement the organization’s ongoing efforts to provide students with an exemplary college-prep education and leadership skills in order to graduate from high school, pursue post-secondary education, and live choice-filled lives.
The new campus will be located down the street from a key partner of KIPP Minnesota, the Northside Achievement Zone (NAZ) and the two organizations will continue their partnership at the newest middle school.
NAZ CEO, Sondra Samuels recently commented, “KIPP is an extremely promising public school that has made strong academic gains and continues to do so. They are committed to our children and families in North Minneapolis, where more great schools like KIPP are sorely needed. And given our mission at NAZ to end multigenerational poverty using education and whole family support as the levers, there is no Northside Achievement Zone without effective schools like KIPP.”
